SHILLONG : From the hills of Meghalaya to an international parliamentary forum, Nandini Ishvi O. Sangma of Don Bosco College, Tura, represented India at the 13th Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Sydney, Australia, where she shared the State’s unique identity while speaking on democracy, gender equality and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Standing before delegates from Commonwealth nations, the Political Science student introduced Meghalaya’s matrilineal tradition, vibrant culture, living root bridges and natural beauty. She described matriliny as a system centred on family values and social responsibility rather than female dominance, adding that genuine equality can only be achieved when everyone has access to the same opportunities.
Her address also turned to the challenges women continue to face across the world. Calling for better access to education and stronger action against gender-based violence, she urged governments and communities to work towards a more inclusive society.
In another session on the Artificial Intelligence and Democratic Integrity Bill 2026, Nandini advocated for the ethical development of AI, saying technological progress should strengthen democratic institutions without replacing human judgment or accountability.
She attended the Commonwealth Youth Parliament after being nominated by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, with support from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Her participation placed Meghalaya on an international platform and highlighted the growing contribution of young voices from the Northeast in global discussions.
