Muktapur youth found safe in Tumkur after two-week interstate search operation

SHILLONG : Kwis Sumer of Muktapur village in East Jaiñtia Hills District, who went missing on July 15 after travelling to Karnataka for work, is back home in Meghalaya, following a two-week search effort involving both state police forces.

His family flagged the disappearance to the state government through a formal memorandum on July 27. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma personally took up the matter with the Karnataka government, setting interstate coordination in motion and pulling local agencies into the search.

A Meghalaya Police team led by IPS officer Lovish Garg travelled to Bengaluru, joined by members of Sumer’s clan, and worked closely with senior Karnataka Police officials, including DIG Iada Martin Marbaniang, to piece together his last known movements using technical and investigative leads.

The breakthrough came when Sumer managed to reach out to his family through social media, helped by Kavi Kumar, a local resident who had been sheltering him during his time in Karnataka. Police moved quickly on that lead and traced him to Tiptur in Tumkur district, where he was found safe and taken into official care before arrangements were made for his journey home.

He arrived in Shillong on Monday to a warm welcome from family and clan members, before heading back to Muktapur.

Sangma credited the joint effort for the successful outcome. “With the help of the Karnataka Police, especially the Bengaluru Police, and the hard work of the Meghalaya Police and other stakeholders, we were able to find him. He is back safely to our State, and I take this opportunity to once again thank all those who have played a role,” he said.

The Chief Minister’s Office also extended appreciation to several people who played a part behind the scenes: the Karnataka Police for their swift cooperation, the Meghalaya Police team for its persistence, community members who supported the search, Dr. D. Rockyer L. Nonglait for helping establish early contact with the CM’s office, and Kavi Kumar, whose decision to shelter Sumer and help him reconnect with his family proved decisive.

Sumer, for his part, thanked the Chief Minister for helping bring him home, a sentiment his clan members echoed as well.
