
TURA : More than 250 students from 12 schools gathered in Tura on Wednesday for International Youth Day, with one of the main highlights being the experience shared by Meghalaya youth parliamentarian Nandini Ishvi O. Sangma after her recent participation in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Sydney.
Nandini recently represented India at the 13th Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Australia. Speaking to students at the Working Women’s Hostel in Tura, she spoke about her journey from taking part in college and town-level youth parliaments to reaching an international platform.
She also shared details of the parliamentary exercise involving the Artificial Intelligence and Democratic Integrity Bill and spoke about the preparation, discipline and time management required during the programme. Nandini said the Sydney experience allowed her to interact with young people from 57 Commonwealth countries and learn about different cultures and viewpoints. She also encouraged the students not to give up when they face setbacks and to continue working towards their goals.
The programme was attended by Pearla Tatyana D. Sangma, MCS, as chief guest, along with officials from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, teachers, youth representatives and artists.
Pearla congratulated Nandini for representing Meghalaya internationally and spoke about the growing role of young people in education, sports, entrepreneurship and other areas. She also warned students about drug abuse and urged them to stay away from drugs while encouraging them to create awareness among their peers.
The students were also informed about the Rah-Veer Scheme, under which a person who helps an accident victim can receive ₹25,000.
Another young participant, singer Prachi Muchahary, spoke about her experience representing Meghalaya in Malaysia after being selected through a block-level competition. Prachi said the experience helped her learn more about the Garo language, culture and traditions despite coming from a non-Garo-speaking background. She encouraged other students to develop confidence and take part in activities that can help them grow..
The International Youth Day programme was held under the theme, “Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation Through Technology and Partnerships.”
Cultural dance and musical performances were also held during the programme, including a performance by singer Noga M. Sangma.
The event was organised by the Office of the District Sports Officer, West Garo Hills, under the Government of Meghalaya.
