North Garo Hills courts convict six in two criminal cases, award up to four years

SHILLONG – Six accused have been convicted in two criminal cases by courts in North Garo Hills, with sentences ranging from three to four years of simple imprisonment and fines.

In Bajengdoba Police Station Case No. 19(06)2024, registered under Sections 326, 379, 452, 509 and 34 of the IPC, five accused were convicted after trial before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, North Garo Hills, Mendipathar.

The case was investigated by WPSI B Hajong, who submitted the charge sheet after completion of the investigation.

In its judgment dated August 19, 2026, the court in State V. Smt. Margereth R. Sangma convicted the five accused for offences punishable under Sections 380, 323, 354, 354, 452 and 509 of the IPC.

The accused were sentenced to a total of four years’ simple imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 10,000. In default of payment of the fine, the convicts will undergo an additional nine months of simple imprisonment.

In a separate case, Kharkutta Police Station Case No. 13(12)2023, registered under Sections 324 and 307 of the IPC, the Judicial Magistrate First Class, North Garo Hills, Mendipathar convicted Teseng G Momin under Section 324 of the IPC.

The court delivered its judgment on August 17, 2026, sentencing Momin to three years’ simple imprisonment.

North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Ishan Gupta, IPS, said the convictions followed investigation, evidence collection and prosecution before the courts.

The police said the cases reflected continued efforts to ensure that offences are investigated and prosecuted in accordance with law.
