NPP hits back at Bernard Marak over remarks on Esmatur Mominin bail

SHILLONG :The National People’s Party (NPP) on Monday rejected allegations made by BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak over the bail granted to former Phulbari MLA S.G. Esmatur Mominin in connection with the recent Garo Hills unrest cases.

Responding to Marak’s remarks, NPP Garo Hills spokesperson Aldo A. Sangma said the party wanted to “place certain facts in the proper perspective” and stressed that bail decisions are taken independently by the courts.“

In a democratic system governed by the rule of law, judicial decisions are taken independently by competent courts based on legal principles and available facts,” Sangma said.

“The executive government has no role in determining judicial outcomes, including the granting of bail,” he added.

The NPP statement came after Bernard Marak questioned whether there was a “nexus” involving Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Esmatur Mominin and NPP leader Sofior Rehman following the bail granted to both leaders within a short period. Without directly naming Marak again, the NPP cautioned political leaders against making statements that could create confusion over sensitive legal matters.

“All public representatives and political leaders should exercise restraint and responsibility while commenting on sensitive legal matters,” Sangma said.

He further stated that bail should not be interpreted as innocence or closure of the case.

“Bail is a legal provision available under the law and does not amount to acquittal or exoneration,” the statement said. “Investigations in the matter continue, and the due process of law will take its own course,” it added. The party also defended the government’s overall approach, saying the State and Centre have continued to focus on development, welfare and maintaining peace in Meghalaya.

“The State and Central Governments, working in cooperation, have continued to focus on development, infrastructure, welfare, and economic growth for all sections of society,” Sangma stated.

As political tensions continue over the recent unrest in Garo Hills, the NPP appealed to all parties to avoid divisive politics and maintain communal harmony.

“The NPP remains committed to peace, constitutional values, communal harmony, and inclusive development for every citizen of Meghalaya,” Sangma said.
