A viral video circulating on social media has sparked confusion and speculation over the condition of Meghalaya’s new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang, with many users claiming that a portion of the roof had collapsed even before the project’s completion.

The Meghalaya New Assembly Roof citizens believe it collapse

Shillong, May 11 : The Meghalaya Public Works Department (Buildings) has dismissed viral claims suggesting that the roof of the new Assembly building had collapsed, stating that the video circulating online does not show any structural damage to the project.

Officials clarified that the portion seen in the video involves replacement work on Pre-Painted Galvalume (PPGL) sheets fitted above the main reinforced cement concrete (RCC) roof slab.

According to the department, these sheets are mainly used for exterior finishing and appearance and are not connected to the building’s primary structural support system.

In a statement, the Chief Engineer of PWD (Buildings) said a joint inspection of the Assembly project was carried out on April 22 by department officials and project consultants ahead of the final handover.

During the inspection, the contractor Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd was directed to carry out several rectification works, including changing uneven or stained roof sheets and removing stickers and marks from windows and other surfaces. Officials said the replacement process began a few days ago and is still underway.

Project Management Consultant Sumit Roy of The Design Associates also rejected reports of any roof collapse at the site.

Roy explained that workers were cleaning the roofing sheets when some sections were accidentally damaged because of improper handling during maintenance work.

“The damaged sheets are already being replaced with new ones,” he said.

He further stated that the Assembly project is now nearing completion, with only minor finishing work, cleaning and final corrections left before formal completion.

The clarification follows widespread circulation of videos and social media posts questioning the quality of construction at the high-profile Assembly complex in Mawdiangdiang.

The department urged people not to spread unverified or misleading claims that could create unnecessary confusion among the public.
