PYNTER : A youth from Pynter village in East Khasi Hills district was allegedly assaulted by the village headman and members of the Village Defence Party (VDP), according to an FIR filed by the victim’s father at Sadar police station on May 5.

The deceased has been identified as Trophimos Khongmawloh.

According to the complaint lodged by his father, Netnobiweit Khongsdong, the family decided to approach the police after a video reportedly showing Trophimos being assaulted inside a dorbar hall surfaced on April 7.

Khongsdong alleged that the circumstances surrounding his son’s death were different from the explanation initially provided to the family.

He further claimed that Trophimos’s body was brought home on April 8 in a sack.

During the last rites conducted on April 9, the father alleged that family members were not allowed to give the deceased a final bath or view the body, as the coffin had allegedly been sealed on the instructions of the village headman.

The FIR also disputed claims that Trophimos died after ingesting glass, with the family stating that the video raised serious questions regarding the circumstances leading to his death.

Police are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the allegations or the status of the investigation.
