Assam gas gets new link to Northeast grid as ONGC commissions Khoraghat facility

ONGC links Assam gas to Northeast grid, expanding supply for homes and industry

GUWAHATI : Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has connected its Khoraghat gas facility in Assam’s Golaghat district to the North East Gas Grid, opening a route for nearly one lakh standard cubic metres of gas to be moved and used every day.

ONGC commissioned the gas evacuation facilities at Khoraghat GGS-1 on August 18, allowing surplus gas from its Upper Assam Shelf operations to be processed and fed into the regional pipeline network for the first time.

The Khoraghat facility sits within ONGC’s long-running operations in Assam, where the company has produced oil and gas for decades, but until now, some of that available production lacked sufficient evacuation infrastructure to actually reach the grid. This new arrangement fixes that gap, giving surplus gas from the region a direct route into the wider network rather than going unused.

The North East Gas Grid itself was built to connect the region’s gas-producing areas with major consumption centres, spanning all eight northeastern states and supporting gas use across industry, transport, households and other sectors.

Khoraghat now becomes another supply point feeding into that network. ONGC has said the project should improve gas utilisation and strengthen energy availability across the region, while also helping cut down on gas flaring, essentially making better use of gas that was already being produced locally rather than letting it go to waste.

The Khoraghat facility doesn’t create a fresh one lakh SCM of gas production on its own, it provides the infrastructure to evacuate and use gas that ONGC’s Assam fields were already capable of producing. With Assam remaining one of India’s oldest oil and gas producing regions, concentrated heavily around Upper Assam, routing more of that gas through the regional grid could also reduce how much the Northeast needs to bring in supplies from outside the region.

The move fits into a broader national push to grow gas’s share of India’s energy mix, given how widely it’s used across fertiliser plants, power generation, city-gas networks and industrial units.

For the Northeast specifically, a more dependable gas supply through this grid is also being positioned as a piece of industrial infrastructure that could factor into future investment decisions, not just serve existing users.
