SHILLONG — A Mizoram doctor has become the first Indian recipient of a new US Consulate award after his hospital treated a seriously injured American journalist. The recognition is real. The longer record behind it is more interesting.
Dr Vanlalsiama Chhangte, Medical Director of Ebenezer Medical Center in Aizawl, received the US Consulate General in Kolkata’s Citizen Liaison Volunteer of the Year Award this week. US Vice Consul Warren Newton presented it in Aizawl. Chhangte is the first person in India to receive the award.
The case that brought him to the Consulate’s attention began in Myanmar. American freelance journalist and war correspondent Collin Mayfield was seriously injured in Chin State in November 2025 while reporting from the conflict. He was brought into Mizoram on 1 December and treated at Ebenezer for roughly a month. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Lalrinliana Varte performed the surgery. Mayfield recovered sufficiently to return to the United States.
Chhangte did not arrive at this moment by accident.
Government records list his date of birth as 15 November 1973 and his qualifications as MBBS and MD in Anaesthesia. His state medical registration is dated 2017. He earlier served as a medical officer at Civil Hospital Aizawl. By December 2019 he was secretary of the Non-Government Hospital Association of Mizoram, representing private hospitals in discussions with the state government over financing and access.
His career moved steadily into administration. He is now Medical Director of Ebenezer Medical Center and is also listed as its managing director. The hospital runs Aizawl College of Nursing.
Chhangte has described its mission as transforming lives through healthcare and has emphasised training that combines clinical competence with integrity. He has also spoken publicly about the difficulties private hospitals face under Mizoram’s healthcare schemes, including reimbursement rates and delayed payments. The same voice appears in programmes on leadership and professional responsibility.
When the award was announced, Chhangte credited the wider Ebenezer team – doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and administrative staff – rather than accepting it as a personal honour. The gesture was consistent with the rest of the record.
The Consulate’s first Citizen Liaison Volunteer of the Year Award in India has gone to a doctor whose career began in Mizoram’s public health system and moved into private hospital leadership. The American patient went home. The recognition stayed in Aizawl.
