SHILLONG — West Garo Hills is looking to expand apprenticeship opportunities for young people as the district reviews implementation of the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS).
Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, chaired the District Skill Committee meeting on Apprenticeship Awareness at the NIC VC Room in Tura, focusing on how more youth and establishments can be brought into the programme.
The Principal of ITI Tura explained how apprenticeship combines workplace training with classroom learning, helping young people gain practical experience while developing skills suited to industry requirements. The meeting also highlighted government support through stipend reimbursement via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Officials were given a demonstration of the Apprenticeship Portal, including the registration process for both candidates and establishments. Additional Deputy Commissioner Florina Boro, MCS, along with officials from NRLM and other departments, participated in the discussion.
Aggarwal directed departments to identify and compile details of their beneficiaries who could benefit from apprenticeship opportunities. He also asked ITI Tura and MSSDS to organise a video conference with establishments already registered on the PM-NAPS portal.
The administration said the focus is on turning apprenticeship into a practical route for young people to gain skills and improve their employment prospects in the district.
Youth and establishments in West Garo Hills can register through the official Apprenticeship India portal.
