SHILLONG — Voters caught in Meghalaya’s Special Intensive Revision process will not necessarily have to travel to election offices to respond to notices, with Booth Level Officers directed to visit their homes in cases involving No Mapping or logical discrepancies.

Under the latest Election Commission directions reviewed by Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari, BLOs will collect the required documents from such electors and upload them on ECINET for consideration by the Electoral Registration Officer.

The concerned elector will ordinarily not have to appear personally before the ERO or AERO. Where a hearing is considered necessary in exceptional circumstances, it should preferably be conducted online. An adult family member can also attend the hearing on behalf of the elector.

The CEO has directed election officials to ensure the arrangement works particularly for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those who face difficulty travelling to election offices.

The Election Commission has also asked District Election Officers to establish help desks and organise special camps for labourers, people living in night shelters, economically disadvantaged persons, homeless people and other vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, 23,259 applications received during the revision have been digitised, including 12,624 Form 6 applications, 1,616 Form 7 applications, 1,590 Form 8 applications for shifting and 7,429 Form 8 applications for corrections.

The electoral registration process will also continue after SIR. Eligible people left out during the exercise, including young and first-time voters, can seek inclusion through continuous updation.

The CEO has urged electors to check their names once the final electoral roll is published, noting that possession of an EPIC alone does not entitle a person to vote if their name is absent from the electoral roll.
