SHILLONG — A recruitment process meant to fill contractual Staff Nurse posts at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Nongstoin, was thrown into interruption on Tuesday after VPP Nongstoin MDC Dr Juristman Iawphniaw entered the interview hall while the selection process was underway, prompting the West Khasi Hills District Administration to condemn the intervention.
The administration said the MDC entered the conference room without prior intimation or permission, raised his voice at members of the interview board in front of candidates and disrupted the proceedings. He was subsequently escorted to the Deputy Commissioner’s chamber, where he raised allegations concerning the recruitment process.
The recruitment is for contractual Staff Nurse posts at MCH Nongstoin. A written examination was held at Nongstoin College on September 21, after which 60 candidates were shortlisted for personal interviews scheduled for September 29 and 30.
The VPP’s intervention followed allegations raised by its State Youth Wing that candidates were being asked for money in exchange for Staff Nurse appointments. The group had sought suspension of the interviews pending an inquiry, citing complaints from aspirants and an allegation that demands could reach ₹4 lakh. One candidate was alleged to have already paid ₹1 lakh.
The allegations, however, have not been established. The district administration said the selection is strictly based on merit through the written examination and personal interview, and that no payment is required at any stage.
It has asked anyone with information about money demands or other malpractice to submit a written complaint with specific details and supporting evidence to the Deputy Commissioner. The administration said complaints would be examined and action taken if anyone is found involved. Candidates were also cautioned against touts or anyone claiming they could influence the selection process.
The VPP has called for the interviews to remain suspended until the allegations are investigated. The district administration, meanwhile, said the recruitment will continue under a fair and transparent process.
