SHILLONG — A routine police check at Urkaliar turned violent around 1:30 am on Friday, when a scooty allegedly sped through the naka and rammed Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, leaving him seriously injured.
Police said two men were travelling on the scooty and attempted to evade the checking despite being signalled to stop. Garg moved to intercept them and prevent their escape, but the rider allegedly accelerated directly towards the officer and struck him.
The injured officer was rushed to Woodland Hospital for emergency treatment before being shifted to the HD Unit. The incident has now moved beyond a routine traffic violation, with police treating the collision as a potentially deliberate attack on an officer on duty.
SP (City), East Khasi Hills, Dangsan Khyriem, said the circumstances indicated an intention to cause grievous injury and escape the police check.
“A case is being registered for attempt to murder,” he said.
Police suspect the two men are KSU members, although that has not been established and their identities remain under investigation. Police are also examining why they were travelling at that hour and what prompted the attempt to evade the naka.
The incident comes as Shillong police continue heightened checking operations. The department said naka checking would continue and that attempts to evade lawful checks or act against personnel on duty would be dealt with under the law.
