SHILLONG : Three people, including a three-year-old child, were injured after a Bolero pick-up allegedly suffered a brake failure and rammed into several vehicles at Mawlai Iewrynghep on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place at around 8:15 am near Meika Shop, a busy stretch where morning traffic was moving towards different parts of Shillong.
According to police, the Bolero pick-up (ML06 8554), driven by 45-year-old Barstone Shabong of Laitlyngkot, was travelling towards Mawlai Motsyiar when the driver reportedly lost control after the vehicle’s braking system failed. The pick-up crossed into the opposite lane and struck two scooters before crashing into two cars.
Among those injured were Mercy D. Sangma (35) and her three-year-old child, Rikdora D. Sangma, residents of the 1st MLP Battalion, who were travelling on scooter number ML05AE 3057. Another scooter rider, Gilbert Pakynteiñ (25) of Mawiong, also sustained injuries in the collision.People nearby rushed the injured to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital for treatment.
The crash also left a Hyundai Venue (ML05AB 7973) and another private vehicle (AP39MM 6336) with minor damage. Police said the owners of both vehicles chose not to lodge formal complaints.
Investigators have seized the Bolero for examination. A medical test confirmed that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol. A mechanical inspection has now been ordered to determine whether brake failure was indeed the cause of the accident.
Police have registered a suo motu FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
