Conrad Speak in a Meeting with Rangbah Shnong in Ri Bhoi

Nongpoh, May 7: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday attended a programme organised by the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri Bhoi in Nongpoh, where local leaders raised several concerns related to education, electricity, infrastructure, healthcare and border development.

During the interaction, held under a “Mini CM Connect” initiative, the Synjuk submitted a memorandum highlighting key demands from the district, including the need for a Government College in Nongpoh. Responding to the request, the Chief Minister said the government would examine the proposal. On issues related to electricity, Sangma informed the gathering that a 132 KV substation is currently being set up in Nongpoh to improve power supply in the region and nearby areas. He added that the government would also explore establishing additional substations in phases while temporarily strengthening manpower to address existing power-related concerns.

The meeting also focused on agricultural and market infrastructure. The Synjuk raised the need for a proper pig market and better facilities for local farmers.

In response, the Chief Minister acknowledged the growing demand and said the government would study the possibility of establishing a structured farmers’ market. He also assured strict monitoring of price spikes linked to supply from outside the state.Concerns from villages along the Meghalaya–Assam border, particularly Mawlasnai, were also discussed during the programme.

Local representatives highlighted issues related to road connectivity, GPS mapping, security, electricity and shortage of medical staff in border areas.

Sangma assured that the state government would take up the border-related matters with the Assam Government and review staffing at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the affected areas.

The Chief Minister also stressed the need for a more proactive administrative response in border regions.

In a major announcement during the event, the Chief Minister sanctioned ₹50 lakh support for the construction of the office of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri Bhoi.

The financial assistance will be provided through a convergence sanction under the Chief Minister’s Development Fund and the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA).

The Chief Minister also thanked the Synjuk for working together with the government in pushing development initiatives across Ri Bhoi district.
