Conrad Sangma backs DRL Nonglait, says no party has a better candidate for Shillong seat

Shillong, May 7: Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday strongly endorsed the candidature of Dr D.R.L. Nonglait for the upcoming Shillong parliamentary contest, describing him as a leader who believes in unity, non-violence and public service.

Addressing a large gathering during the candidate announcement programme, Sangma said Nonglait’s personality, contribution to society and commitment towards the Khasi community made him the ideal candidate for the Shillong seat.

“I don’t think any political party can have a better candidate than Dr DRL Nonglait,” Sangma said, while praising the Khasi Authors’ Society president for his work and dedication over the years.The chief minister credited Nonglait and language organisations for their role in the recognition of Khasi and Garo as official languages in Meghalaya.

“Because of your efforts, Khasi and Garo are official languages today,” he said while thanking Nonglait, the Khasi Authors’ Society and Achik organisations for their contribution.Sangma also highlighted the crowd turnout at the programme, claiming that the attendance exceeded expectations.

“We had prepared for around 3,000 people, but nearly 10,000 people have come here today,” he said, calling the response a strong sign of support for the NPP candidate.Describing Nonglait as a simple and down-to-earth individual, Sangma said the academician had spent decades working for society and promoting peaceful democratic values.

He said Nonglait stood as an example that political goals could be achieved through constitutional and non-violent means rather than “street politics.”

“There are certain political parties that believe in creating problems and violence, but Dr Nonglait represents democratic and constitutional ways,” Sangma stated.

The chief minister further described Nonglait’s candidature as a “historic moment” for the Khasi-Jaintia region and the NPP, adding that the development reflected “God’s plan” for the state and its people.
