SHILLONG — Young participants from schools across West Jaintia Hills competed in the second District Level Chief Minister’s Youth Engagement Programme held at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai, on September 24 and 25.

The programme brought together winners of block-level competitions from Amlarem, Thadlaskein, Laskein and Namdong. Amlarem had nine schools taking part, followed by eight from Thadlaskein and four each from Laskein and Namdong.

Drawing and painting, guitar, singing, traditional dance, tug of war, quiz and one-act play were among the competitions. Winners will represent West Jaintia Hills at the state level.

Assistant Commissioner and Laskein BDO Kyntu Shullai praised the participants, saying, “Many participants demonstrated talent worthy of recognition.” He also wished the selected winners success at the next level.

State Youth Officer Boby Wahlang said the programme, earlier known as the Meghalaya Youth Exchange Programme, was expanded to the block level last year to bring opportunities closer to young people.“Participation at Block Level has grown significantly,” Wahlang said, noting that around 14,000 youths took part in 2025, compared with 18,000 in 2026.

He said the programme provides a pathway for participants to progress from block level to district, state, national and international competitions.

District School Education Officer Waisa Sumer, District Sports Officer Linza F. Syiem, officials, teachers and students attended the programme.
