Japan, April 2026 : A powerful earthquake measuring around 7.4 to 7.5 magnitude struck off the northern coast of Japan on April 20, triggering tsunami alerts and emergency evacuations in several coastal areas.
According to authorities, the quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the Sanriku region at a relatively shallow depth, intensifying its impact.
The tremors were strong enough to be felt across a wide area, including parts of Tokyo. Following the earthquake, Japan’s meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning, cautioning that waves of up to 3 metres could hit coastal regions.
Initial waves of around 80 centimetres were already recorded at some ports. Residents in affected prefectures were urged to move to higher ground immediately, with more than 100,000 people advised to evacuate as a precaution.

Transport services, including bullet trains, were temporarily suspended while authorities assessed the situation. Officials also confirmed that no major damage or casualties had been reported so far, though monitoring continues.
Experts have warned that aftershocks may continue over the coming days, and coastal residents have been advised to remain alert until the tsunami threat is fully lifted.
Japan lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world.
