SHILLONG : The Meghalaya State Bar Association on Wednesday brought to the notice of the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court the public parading of an advocate accused of molesting a law intern, after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.
The advocate, who is facing allegations of sexually molesting a law intern, was seen in the viral video being taken through parts of Shillong with his hands on his ears. An official source said the matter was formally mentioned before the Chief Justice following the circulation of the video.
The case stems from an FIR lodged at Sadar Police Station by a law intern, who accused the advocate of molesting her inside his chamber on Keating Road on Tuesday. The complainant also alleged that the advocate offered her ₹500 in an attempt to silence her after the incident.
Following the complaint, members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) took up the matter and accompanied the intern in pursuing the case. Police have registered the case and are investigating the allegations. The advocate’s response to the allegations was not immediately available.
The Meghalaya State Bar Association has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the allegations but has informed the Chief Justice about the manner in which the accused advocate was publicly paraded through the city.
