India’s outward FDI rises to $5.7 billion in July, RBI data shows

Indian firms raise overseas investment 17% to $5.7 billion in July

Mumbai : Indian companies pledged $5.70 billion toward overseas investments in July, bouncing back sharply from a weak June and running 17 percent higher than the same month last year, according to provisional Reserve Bank of India data.

The July figure sits well above June’s $3.14 billion and clears the $4.88 billion committed in July 2025, a jump of roughly 81 percent month-on-month. RBI’s overseas investment data tracks financial commitments by Indian entities, covering equity stakes, loans, and guarantees tied to subsidiaries, joint ventures, and other foreign ventures abroad, meaning the $5.70 billion figure reflects commitments made rather than cash that physically left the country within the month.

Companies typically deploy this kind of capital to set up subsidiaries, expand existing foreign operations, enter new markets, or build production and distribution networks beyond India’s borders, positioning it as part of longer-term international strategy rather than a straightforward domestic outflow.

June’s numbers put the rebound in sharper context. Overseas investment commitments had fallen to around $3 billion that month, down nearly 48 percent from $5.74 billion a year earlier.

Equity commitments alone came to just $738.32 million, loans totalled $469.87 million, and guarantees made up roughly $1.78 billion. Monthly figures at this scale can swing considerably depending on when large corporate deals, subsidiary funding rounds, or major project commitments happen to get reported.

The full-year trend holds steadier. Indian companies committed close to $48.6 billion toward overseas investment across 2025-26, up from about $43.7 billion the year before, a pace that has held even as individual months moved unevenly.

RBI’s data also shows the range these commitments take.

In June, ONGC Videsh Rovuma Limited put $40 million in equity toward its Mozambique venture. Lenskart committed $22 million to its Singapore subsidiary. GFCL EV Products invested $30.13 million in an overseas joint venture. Zydus Worldwide made a $183 million debt commitment to its UAE subsidiary. Each reflects a different rationale, an energy company funding a project abroad, a consumer brand building international reach, a manufacturer locating closer to customers or suppliers, but together they point to Indian companies steadily expanding their international footprint, gaining access to markets, technology and supply chains that are harder to build purely at home.

That expansion sits alongside the reverse flow of capital into India. Gross FDI inflows stood at $6.1 billion in May 2026, though repatriation, disinvestment and outward FDI together produced a larger net outflow that same month, underscoring why the composition of capital flows matters more than any single month’s headline figure.

July’s rebound puts monthly commitments back above year-ago levels after June’s sharp dip.
