SHILLONG — Shillong’s hawker relocation has reached the money stage. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday handed ₹20,000 in one-time assistance to vendors moved to the designated markets at Barik and Dhanketi.
The relocation has brought vendors from Barik, Dhanketi, Laitumkhrah and adjoining areas into designated vending spaces as the government tries to clear busy streets without leaving those who depended on them without a place to earn.
Sangma acknowledged that the exercise was far more difficult than simply shifting vendors from one location to another, because the government was dealing with livelihoods as well as the appearance and use of Shillong’s roads.
“Though it may look like a small and simple step, it is one of the most challenging situations that we have faced because it is not only about development but linked with the livelihood of the people and the overall beautification of the city,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the new vending locations were chosen with both concerns in mind. The government plans to develop the markets with toilet facilities, seating areas, decorative lighting and evening live performances, and has urged residents and tourists to shop there.
The ₹20,000 support will not arrive as a single payment. Vendors will receive ₹10,000 initially through Direct Benefit Transfer, followed by ₹2,000 each month for five months.
Arts and Culture Minister, South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA M. Ampareen Lyngdoh and Urban Affairs officials were present during the distribution.
