Mumbai, April 12: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday in Mumbai following a cardiac arrest, marking the end of an extraordinary era in Indian music.

She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai after her health deteriorated on Saturday. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed her passing on Sunday afternoon. The last rites will be conducted with full state honours at Shivaji Park crematorium on Monday evening.

A Musical Journey Spanning Generations

Asha Bhosle began her career at a young age, recording her first song “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for a Marathi film in 1943. She entered Hindi cinema with “Saawan Aaya” in Chunariya (1948), while her first solo Hindi film song came in Raat Ki Rani (1949).

Over the decades, she became one of the most versatile voices in Indian music, effortlessly moving between genres. From energetic hits like “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” and “Yeh Mera Dil” to soulful ghazals such as “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” and “In Aankhon Ki Masti,” her voice defined generations. Her collaborations with composers like O.P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman produced timeless classics, including “Chura Liya Hai Tumne.”

Global Recognition and Modern Revival

In the 1990s and early 2000s, she reinvented herself with a modern sound. Her work with A. R. Rahman on songs like “Tanha Tanha” and “Rangeela Re” introduced her to a new generation. Asha Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages, earning a place in the Guinness World Records for the highest number of studio recordings.

Awards and Honours Her

Immense contribution to Indian music earned her several prestigious recognitions, including:

  • Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000)
  • Padma Vibhushan (2008)
  • Two National Film Awards

Even in recent years, she remained active and connected with audiences. In 2024, she gained widespread attention for performing a contemporary hit song during a concert in Dubai.

Personal Life

Born into the renowned Mangeshkar family, she was the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

After her father’s death, she began singing at an early age to support her family. She was first married to Ganpatrao Bhosle and later to composer R.D. Burman, with whom she shared a long and celebrated partnership.

End of an Era

With her passing, India loses one of its most iconic and versatile voices —a singer whose music transcended generations, languages and genres, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy.
