SHILLONG: Meghalaya BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang has downplayed the growing online attention surrounding the anonymous “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP), saying the movement remains more of a social media trend than a serious political challenge.

Responding to recent discussions around the group, Kharkrang said there is little evidence to suggest the movement possesses the structure or leadership required to emerge as a credible political force in the state.

“We don’t even know who is behind this platform. Having followers online does not automatically translate into political strength or electoral relevance,” he said.

The BJP leader stated that the sudden rise of the CJP appears linked to recent political controversies and public frustration circulating online rather than any long-term ideological movement.

“To me, this looks more like an emotional reaction to certain developments than an organised political alternative,” Kharkrang remarked.

The spokesperson also rejected claims that the popularity of anonymous online campaigns reflects growing disillusionment among Meghalaya’s youth toward mainstream political parties.

“Young people are already participating actively in democratic politics. We have seen many youths contest elections, engage publicly and take leadership roles,” he stated.

Kharkrang further argued that while social media can amplify public sentiment, governance and policymaking cannot function through anonymous digital campaigns alone.

“A country cannot be run through social media narratives. Eventually, people look toward parties with structure, accountability and defined political positions,” he said.

The Cockroach Janata Party has recently attracted attention across social media platforms, particularly among sections of younger users.
