Shillong , April,19 : Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has said that if there is continued opposition to the proposed tourism project at Lumpongdeng in Umiam, the government could consider shifting the investment to other areas that are more willing to host it, including Wahiajer.

His remarks come at a time when protests are ongoing, including a hunger strike by the Green Tech Foundation seeking the scrapping of the project. While acknowledging the protests as part of a democratic process, Dhar indicated that development initiatives may move forward in locations where there is broader acceptance.

The statement was made alongside a series of infrastructure announcements in Wahiajer, where Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects collectively valued at over Rs 100 crore.

The projects include road development under the State Road Fund, upgrades to sports infrastructure, and funding for local development works.

Additional resurfacing works have also been proposed for areas under the Jowai divisions as part of upcoming plans.

Speaking at the event, Tynsong highlighted the government’s focus on improving infrastructure and expanding tourism-related development. He referred to recent hospitality projects in Shillong as examples of efforts aimed at generating employment and strengthening the state’s economic prospects, adding that more such projects are under consideration.

The programme was attended by several ministers and elected representatives. While infrastructure development in rural areas was a key highlight, the government also reiterated its broader strategy of promoting tourism and hospitality as drivers of economic growth.

Separately, Dhar defended the development record of the MDA 2.0 government, stating that infrastructure expansion has been carried out across the state and not limited to specific regions. He said that development initiatives are being implemented in all constituencies and pointed to major projects, including a proposed four-lane greenfield road linking Lad Umroi to Silchar, as part of the government’s long-term planning.

The remarks come amid growing political criticism and protests in certain areas. Dhar maintained that budget allocation has increased over the years and that investments are being made across sectors such as health, water supply, and tourism.

He also addressed concerns over the government’s emphasis on tourism and large-scale events, stating that such initiatives are intended to improve Meghalaya’s visibility and economic opportunities.

He added that upcoming events like the National Games are expected to contribute to infrastructure development across the state.

Dhar said the government remains focused on implementing projects and delivering services, while also working on additional initiatives aimed at sustaining development momentum.
