Meghalaya per-capita income rises 26% in two years, data shows

SHILLONG : Meghalaya’s per-capita income rose to ₹1,57,141 in 2024-25 from ₹1,41,195 a year earlier. The increase of ₹15,946 works out to about 11.3%. Two years earlier, in 2022-23, the figure stood at ₹1,24,673.

The state economy expanded alongside it. GSDP at current prices moved from ₹46,834 crore in 2022-23 to ₹53,223 crore in 2023-24 and ₹59,626 crore in 2024-25. Nominal GSDP growth in 2024-25 was 12.03%; NSDP grew 12.31%.

Against the national number the gap remains wide. India’s per-capita NSDP was ₹2,05,324 in 2024-25. Meghalaya stood at roughly 76.5% of that level – about ₹48,183 lower per person.

Within the Northeast the picture is mixed. Arunachal Pradesh recorded ₹2,46,813, Tripura ₹1,92,842 and Assam ₹1,59,185. Meghalaya was only ₹2,044 below Assam but nearly ₹35,700 behind Tripura and about ₹89,700 behind Arunachal. Several other states have not yet published a 2024-25 figure in the same table, so direct ranking across the region is incomplete.

Sectoral shares in 2024-25 show services dominating at 57% of the economy. Agriculture contributed 26% and manufacturing 17%. Within the primary sector, agriculture, forestry and fishing alone accounted for almost 23%. Manufacturing stood at about 9% and construction at 5.7%.

Nominal growth and real growth diverge. While GSDP rose 12.03% at current prices, real growth after adjusting for prices was estimated at 5.5%. India’s real GDP growth for the year was 6.5%.

The 2026-27 Budget projects GSDP at ₹76,320 crore against a revised ₹67,638 crore for 2025-26 – a 13% increase. If achieved, the economy would have expanded roughly 28% in nominal terms from the 2024-25 level of ₹59,626 crore.

The state has set a longer-term target of reaching the top 10 in per-capita income by 2032. At present it remains about 23.5% below the national figure.
