SHILLONG — Twenty-seven government schools in Ri Bhoi district now have STEM laboratories after NTPC Bongaigaon funded the facilities through its Corporate Social Responsibility programme at a total cost of ₹148.50 lakh.
The labs were inaugurated on September 16 at Umden Umroi RMSA Secondary School by Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare.
Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhishek Saini, IAS, NTPC Bongaigaon Head of Project Arnab Maitra and district education officials attended the programme. The facilities are intended to move STEM learning beyond textbooks by giving students access to practical activities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The project is also aimed at developing problem-solving skills, scientific curiosity and technological awareness among students in government schools. The new laboratories are expected to allow students to test classroom concepts through hands-on activities and practical experiments rather than relying only on conventional classroom instruction.
The project is part of NTPC Bongaigaon’s CSR support for education infrastructure in the district.
The initiative organisers said the labs would provide students with greater opportunities to explore STEM subjects and develop skills linked to innovation and practical problem-solving.
