A fresh political confrontation has erupted in Assam’s Dima Hasao district after the National People’s Party (NPP) strongly objected to remarks made by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa, who allegedly described the party as “Team B.”
The NPP has now demanded a public apology within 48 hours and warned of legal action if the statement is not withdrawn.

Haflong, May 12 :The National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday issued a strong warning to North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa, demanding that he withdraw his recent remarks against the party and issue an unconditional public apology within 48 hours.
The controversy began after Garlosa allegedly referred to the NPP as “Team B” during the Platinum Jubilee celebration of the NCHAC held in Haflong on May 11.
Reacting sharply to the statement, NPP National Working President James K. Sangma described the allegation as “false, malicious and politically motivated.”
“Debolal Garlosa’s attempt to portray the NPP as ‘Team B’ is not only completely false but also reflects a deep sense of insecurity and lack of vision,” Sangma said in a statement.

He further accused the NCHAC Chief Executive Member of using a public platform to spread what he called “fabricated narratives” instead of focusing on governance and public issues.
“When a political leader chooses conspiracy theories and cheap politics over development concerns, it clearly shows a personal agenda to malign another party,” Sangma stated.
The NPP leader also rejected suggestions that the party’s political decisions in Assam were influenced by the BJP or any other political party.
According to Sangma, the decision to field Daniel Langthasa as the NPP candidate for the Haflong (ST) constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly election was taken independently by the party leadership.
“The National People’s Party is not, has never been, and will never be anyone’s ‘Team B’,” he asserted.
Sangma also dismissed claims that discussions involving NPP National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had taken place regarding any political understanding or adjustment with other parties ahead of the elections. He called such allegations “mere fiction.”
The NPP further accused Garlosa of spreading confusion instead of addressing key concerns affecting the people of Dima Hasao, including development and governance issues.
As part of its ultimatum, the party demanded that Garlosa publicly retract his statement through the media and issue an apology within 48 hours.
The party warned that failure to do so would lead to legal action, including a possible defamation case against him in his personal capacity.
Sangma concluded by saying that voters in Dima Hasao are politically aware and capable of judging what he described as “desperate attempts” to spread misinformation for political gain.
