SHILLONG — BJP MLA A.L. Hek is refusing to treat reports of a UCC exemption for tribal states as settled until the Centre puts the position in an official notification.
Asked whether Meghalaya and other tribal states would be kept outside the Uniform Civil Code, the Pynthorumkhrah MLA said statements circulating about the exemption were not enough for him to take a final position.
“As of now, I do not fully believe it until I see the official notification,” Hek said.He said the notification would have to clearly state whether tribal states are exempted before the position can be considered settled.
“We will examine the notification and see what it specifies. If it clearly states that the UCC will not be implemented in tribal states, then it means exemption is granted,” he said.
Hek also pointed to conflicting claims circulating on social media, including posts attributed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggesting that BJP-ruled states would implement the UCC.
For now, Hek said he would wait for the Centre’s formal notification rather than rely on statements or social media reports.
