Meghalaya has launched its first community-based biochar project in Ri Bhoi district, with the state government positioning the initiative as a model that combines climate action, sustainable farming and rural income generation.

Umsli, May 11 : Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday inaugurated the Biochar Unit at Umsli in Ri Bhoi district, marking the launch of Meghalaya’s first community-focused carbon removal initiative.
According to the Chief Minister, the project will convert sustainably harvested bamboo into biochar — a stable carbon-rich material that can improve soil quality, enhance agricultural productivity and store carbon for long periods.
“Together with upcoming units across the State, Meghalaya is building a model where climate action directly benefits our people,” Sangma said.

The government said the initiative is particularly important for Meghalaya, where large portions of agricultural land are affected by acidic soil conditions.
Officials believe biochar can help improve moisture retention, restore soil fertility and support more sustainable farming practices for local farmers.
Apart from environmental benefits, the project is also expected to create economic opportunities for communities involved in bamboo harvesting and processing.
According to the government, the Umsli unit alone has the potential to remove nearly 6,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next 20 years while generating revenue at the local level.
The project forms part of Meghalaya’s broader push toward climate-focused development and sustainable rural livelihood initiatives.
