Shillong bypoll: DRL Nonglait seeks votes, promises to follow up on Khasi language and ILP

SHILLONG : At an NPP by-election campaign meeting held on the evening of July 25 at Nongtalang village under Amlarem Constituency to seek support for NPP candidate Dr. DRL Nonglait, Dr. Nonglait expressed his gratitude to the public, noting that wherever he travels, he sees massive crowds coming out to support him.

“Before visiting the constituencies and villages, I was surprised to find that the people had already decided to extend their support to Dr. Nonglait. For this, I express my deep gratitude to everyone,” said Dr. DRL Nonglait. He added, ” As I have said in other places, your turnout here today stands as proof of this truth.” Calling upon the public for their support, he emphasized the need to join hands to build a stable government for the welfare of society and families.

He explained that his willingness to contest this election on an NPP ticket stems from the work the party has done, noting that it was this government that passed resolutions urging the Central Government to include the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP).Regarding these two issues, he stated that the State Government alone cannot act unilaterally; therefore, if elected, he will actively pursue them. He highlighted that following up on these matters requires an MP from the ruling coalition to ensure smoother progress, citing that any bill brought forward by the ruling side finds an easier path to approval.

Appealing for votes on behalf of Dr. Nonglait, Deputy Chief Minister Bah Sniawbhalang Dhar highlighted key initiatives of the State Government, such as the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for commercial vehicle drivers and owners to clear tax dues. He noted that the government introduced this measure out of genuine concern for the livelihoods of the people, alongside various support schemes for aspiring entrepreneurs.Addressing critiques of the government, he remarked that those who do not understand governance may find fault, but those working on the ground realize the benefits. He added that the people of this region particularly understand the support the government has brought to the tourism sector.

Furthermore, he stated that the growth of tourism brings name and honor to the State of Meghalaya across the country. He also shared that to further improve connectivity for tourism in the Amlarem region, the government has allocated plans to explore new avenues in collaboration with the local public.

The meeting was also addressed by Dr. Hendey Lamin and new inductees into the NPP from Raid Buaim, while the 7-Amlarem Block formally welcomed several prominent leaders from other political parties who joined the NPP.
