SHILLONG: The Jowai-Malidor stretch of National Highway-6 has held up better this monsoon than in previous years, even as heavy rain continues to trigger landslides at several vulnerable locations, Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla said on Tuesday.
Interacting with reporters, Shylla said vehicles are moving normally along the highway and the road remains safe for travel. She admitted the stretch is still far from perfect but stressed that its condition has improved compared to past monsoon seasons.
Fresh landslides, she said, are not unusual in the area during the rainy season and are expected whenever there is prolonged rainfall. The focus now is to keep the highway open and minimise disruption to traffic.
She also appealed to commuters to remain alert, especially while driving at night or during heavy showers, warning that loose rocks and fresh mudslides can occur without notice.
