Garobadha, May 15: The A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF), Garobadha Unit, has submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP), Meghalaya, opposing the reported downgrading of the Garobadha Investigation Centre (IC) into a police outpost and demanding its upgradation into a full-fledged police station.

In the memorandum submitted to the DGP office in Shillong, the organisation stated that Garobadha has witnessed rapid socio-economic growth over the years and now serves as an important centre for trade, education, healthcare and public administration in South West Garo Hills.

The ASPF argued that weakening the existing policing structure at a time of increasing population and growing regional importance could negatively impact law and order in the area.

According to the organisation, Garobadha’s geographical condition, scattered settlements and difficult transportation network, especially during monsoon seasons, make the presence of a fully equipped police station necessary for timely emergency response and public safety.

The memorandum further highlighted the area’s strategic location near inter-district and inter-state corridors, stating that the region remains vulnerable to challenges such as smuggling, illegal transportation of goods and other cross-border criminal activities. The organisation also maintained that downgrading the Investigation Centre would place additional burden on nearby police stations while reducing the efficiency of policing services in the region.

The ASPF said a stronger police presence is essential not only for maintaining law and order but also for supporting development activities, disaster response, youth engagement and community policing initiatives in rural and tribal areas.

Stressing that security and development go hand in hand, the organisation urged the Meghalaya Police to reconsider the decision and instead upgrade the Garobadha Investigation Centre into a full-fledged police station with adequate manpower, infrastructure, communication systems and investigative authority.

Representatives of the ASPF Garobadha Unit also visited the DGP office in Shillong during the submission of the memorandum.
